Dietary Reference Intakes for Folate*

In order for an individual to receive the benefits of folic acid, he or she must consume an amount of folic acid appropriate to his or her particular situation and health profile.  A recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for folate has been established for all age groups by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The table below outlines the IOM’s recommended dietary allowances of folate for most people.  The folate intake for each group should not exceed the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL).

Adequate folic acid for most adults may be met by using a combination of the following strategies:

1.  Taking a vitamin supplement containing 400 mcg of folic acid, or

2.  Eating a fortified breakfast cereal with 100% of the RDA, or

3.  Incorporating enriched foods and foods high in folate into one's diet.
