In infants, folate
levels must be adequate to support rapid tissue growth and the creation of
red blood cells. The Institute of Medicine has set the amount of folate
required for infants at the level that maintains blood folate
concentrations comparable with those of the infant exclusively fed human
milk.[50]
While the serum and plasma folate values reported in infants are much
higher than the values for adults, no data have been found to support the
need to adjust diet.[51]
There have been no reports of signs of folate deficiency in full-term
infants who are exclusively fed human milk.[52]
The concentration of folate in human milk remains relatively constant
regardless of dietary folate intake, unless there is a severe maternal
deficiency.[52]
