| Summary for
Guidelines & Recommendations Adequate folic acid intake for most adults
may be met by using a combination of the following strategies:
-
Taking a
vitamin supplement containing 400 to 800 mcg of folic acid, or
Eating a
fortified breakfast cereal with 100% of the RDA, or
Incorporating
enriched foods and foods high in folate into one's diet.
However, in order for an individual
to receive the benefits of folic acid, he/she must consume an amount of folic acid
appropriate to his/her particular situation and health profile. For example, women with a
previous NTD-affected pregnancy require more folic acid than men.
