Consider other opportunities
to spread the message:
- Enlist your staff to assist in the process. When the
nurse takes vital signs and records family history, he/she might leave a brochure about
folic acid with the patient to read until your arrival. Upon your arrival, you can spend a
minute discussing the importance of folic acid for a woman of reproductive age and follow
the process suggested previously.
- Have brochures and posters in your office that present
information about folic acid. In the office setting, it may be helpful to have a
poster that suggests the importance of folic acid, or one that outlines the kinds of
defects that could be possible in the event of a deficiency.
- Train your staff about the importance of folic acid, so
that they can repeat the importance of your message. If you do not have the time
during the office visit, be sure to have the nurse or attendant handling office paperwork
discuss folic acid as the patient prepares to leave, or when she arrives for the
appointment. By empowering your staff with information about folic acid and its
importance, you will ensure that your patients get the message as well.
- If possible, pass out free samples of folic acid
supplements.
While it may seem daunting to try to squeeze in folic
acid counseling during the course of a hectic day, its reward may be priceless - a healthy
baby. |
