When can I counsel?
Getting the
message across to your patients about folic acid is very simple and takes only a few
minutes to communicate.
Consider delivering the message by:
·
Developing
open communication with your patients, and being perceptive towards instances in
conversation where the folic acid message might be appropriate.
- For
example, if a woman mentions thoughts about having a baby, let her
know that folic acid is important to prepare for
pregnancy.
- Speaking with parents about their need
for folic acid during school eye exams
- Reminding patients of the benefits of
folic acid to general health, and pregnancy in particular when they ask about vitamins to
protect/improve their eyesight.
- Encouraging your staff to promote folic
acid to your patients by providing informative materials for them to refer to while
counseling patients.
- Being a resource to your patients.
Develop a confidential rapport, so that they will feel comfortable approaching you for
information about their health concerns.
- Knowing when to refer your patients.
- For example, if a woman in your practice is at high risk for an NTD-affected pregnancy, make
every effort to connect her with a primary care physician or nutritionist who can help her
to prepare for any planned or unexpected pregnancy. If the woman does not have
health insurance, she may be able to qualify for Medicaid or other publicly sponsored
health insurance. Contact your local health department for information on county
clinic services and availability in your area.
- Having a
Healthwise area in the waiting room, and provide folic acid brochures or other
information to your waiting patients.
By making folic acid counseling a
part of a routine eye exam, you play another important role in your patients health
and the prevention of disease. |
