Folic acid is essential for rapid cell growth during pregnancy, including the creation of
red blood cells. It plays an important role in the production of amino acids
and thymidine, both of which are needed to synthesize DNA. Vitamin B12, another important vitamin, works in conjunction with
folic acid to produce DNA. In organ systems or developmental stages where cells
are multiplying rapidly, the body must be able to synthesize enough DNA for each
cell.
