The most widely
accepted benefit of folic acid is its role in the prevention of birth defects, specifically
neural tube defects (NTDs). Some studies show
that maternal intake of folic acid may prevent other birth defects (i.e., cleft lip and
palate, cardiac outflow tract malformation) as well.
Recent studies suggest that
the benefits of folic acid intake may extend to adults as it may also play a role in the
prevention of some other conditions. Additional research is needed in this area.
