Neural Tube Defects (NTDs)
There are three types of NTDs:
- Anencephaly
- Encephalocele
- Spina Bifida
Of the three types of NTDs, the majority of occurrences (90%) are
spina bifida and anencephaly .

|
Anencephaly
The upper end of the neural
tube does not close. The brain does not
develop completely, or is entirely absent. This
condition is fatal. |
Encephalocele
The
upper end of the neural tube does not close. Parts
of the brain protrude outside the skull in a sac of skin.
Mental capacities do not develop normally. This
NTD accounts for less than 10% of all NTDs annually.
