Remember
Folic acid, a water soluble B vitamin,
may play an important role in the prevention of birth defects, specifically NTDs. Recent
research indicates that folic acid may be linked to the prevention of some other
conditions, but additional research needs to be conducted.
Adequate folic acid for most adults may be met by
using a combination of the following strategies:
1. Taking a
vitamin supplement containing 400 mcg of folic acid, or
2. Eating a
fortified breakfast cereal with 100% of the RDA, or
3. Incorporating
enriched foods and foods high in folate into one's diet.
Keep in mind that individuals with certain health profiles may
require additional supplementation.

can raise awareness and empower individuals to get the folic acid they need. Taking a
minute during a typical encounter to discuss folic acid can possibly prevent a birth
defect.
